Selection & Cutting Data

Carbide Insert Selection Workflow

A reliable recommendation requires the grade, chipbreaker, insert geometry and cutting parameters to be selected as one complete application solution.

Step 1 — Identify the Workpiece Material

ISO Group Workpiece Material JetEdge Recommendation
P Steel and alloy steel JE8025P / JE8035P
M Stainless steel JE6025M
K Cast iron JE4025K
N Aluminium and non-ferrous materials Contact JetEdge
S Heat-resistant alloys and titanium alloys Contact JetEdge
H Hardened steel JE9025H, project-based

Step 2 — Identify the Operation

Turning, grooving, parting, threading and milling require different insert geometries and edge designs.

Step 3 — Evaluate the Cutting Condition

• Continuous cutting
• Light interrupted cutting
• Interrupted cutting
• Stable or unstable setup
• Dry or coolant machining

Step 4 — Select the Grade

Select the grade according to the workpiece material, wear resistance requirement and required edge toughness.

Step 5 — Select the Chipbreaker and Geometry

Confirm the feed range, depth of cut, surface requirement, insert size, nose radius and toolholder compatibility.

Step 6 — Establish Starting Cutting Data

Starting cutting conditions must be adjusted according to the workpiece material, hardness, insert geometry, machine rigidity, tool overhang, coolant and production target.

Basic Calculation Reference

The following formulas provide general calculation references. Actual starting parameters must be selected according to the specific insert, workpiece and machining condition.

Calculation Formula
Turning spindle speed n = (1000 × vc) / (π × D)
Turning feed rate vf = n × fn
Milling spindle speed n = (1000 × vc) / (π × D)
Milling feed rate vf = n × z × fz

Where:

n = spindle speed, r/min
vc = cutting speed, m/min
D = workpiece or cutter diameter, mm
vf = feed rate, mm/min
fn = feed per revolution, mm/rev
fz = feed per tooth, mm/tooth
z = number of effective teeth

Initial Troubleshooting Guide

Current Problem Initial Check
Edge chipping Check setup stability, edge strength, interruption and grade toughness
Rapid flank wear Review cutting speed, wear resistance and coolant condition
Built-up edge Review edge sharpness, cutting speed and lubrication
Poor chip control Match feed and depth of cut to the chipbreaker working range
Poor surface finish Check nose radius, feed, runout, edge condition and setup rigidity
Unstable tool life Check clamping, runout, interruption, batch consistency and cutting parameters
